It’s true, a little bit of butter goodness is enough to add a rich flavour and a whole lot of nutrition to your food. Whether you’re making some caramelised onions or baking butter cookies, butter is one of the most essential ingredients in a variety of different recipes. However, as you’re going through recipes with butter, you may notice that some recipes with butter call for unsalted butter and some for salted ones.

Difference between salted and unsalted butter

Salted Butter

Salted butter just like unsalted butter is made by churning cow’s milk and mostly contains butter fats. Typically, it is 80% fat and 20% milk solids and water. Just like the name suggests, salted butter has salt added in it. Depending on different brands, the salt content in butter ranges between 1.5- 2%. Salted butter can be used for all types of cooking and adds extra flavour to your food. However, salted butter is not always recommended in baking. Affecting the sweetness of your recipe, salted butter may turn your baked goodies too salty.

Unsalted Butter

Like the name suggests, unsalted butter is simply pure butter with no added salt in it. Owing to its shorter shelf life, many consider it to be fresher than salted butter. However, unsalted butter is considered to be more preferable than salted butter when it comes to baking. It allows complete control over the flavour of the baked product.

Salted Butter vs. Unsalted Butter

Along with an added flavour, the salt in salted butter also serves as a preservative and extends the shelf life of the butter. It is ideal for spreading over a slice of bread or melting over homemade dosas. On the other hand, unsalted butter is butter in its purest form and has a shorter shelf life compared to salted butter. When it comes to flavour, unsalted butter is known to have a more refreshing and sweet taste.

Now, let’s take a look at the nutritional differences between salted and unsalted butter.

One tablespoon serving of unsalted butter contains:

100 Calories.

12g Fat.

7g Saturated fat.

12 g Protein.

01g Carbohydrates.

0g Sodium.

0g Sugars.

One tablespoon serving of salted butter contains:

100 Calories.

12g Fat.

7g Saturated fat.

12 g Protein.

01g Carbohydrates.

90mg Sodium.

0g Sugars.

So, about 90mg of sodium per tablespoon is the only difference between salted and unsalted butter from a nutritional standpoint. Essentially, all butter is made from milk and contains about 80% milk fat, 18% water and 2% milk solids. There’s a long list of butter brands in India but none of them offer the premium quality and brilliant taste of President Butter. France’s No.1 butter, President offers you a range of salted as well as unsalted butter and is now available in India.
